Kevin Garnett Signs With Anta - CounterKicks EXCLUSIVE

CounterKicks has exclusively confirmed through multiple sources that Kevin Garnett has officially signed an endorsement contract with Chinese sportswear brand ANTA and will leave adidas at the end of the current NBA season. Continue reading for breaking news on Kevin Garnett signing with ANTA…

The deal was set to be officially announced later this summer in China, as Garnett’s contract with adidas allows for an opt-out at the end of the current NBA season next month. Garnett’s new endorsement deal with ANTA, while still unofficially announced, is reported to be for a huge sum – enough to leave adidas where he had signed a “lifetime endorsement contract” back in 2003. At the time, former adidas Basketball Public Relations Manager Travis Gonzolez went so far as to say about the adidas-KG arrangement: “We’re actually looking for Kevin to wear our shoes not only during his playing career but driving our basketball business long after his career on the court.”

While Kevin Garnett’s switch to ANTA from adidas seems sudden, Garnett gained a reputation early on in his career for frequently changing his footwear endorsements after signing with Nike out of high school and leaving the Beaverton-based company after only five years for AND1, where he stayed for two years before finally settling in with adidas. And now, the 34-year-old Boston Celtics forward has left the adidas “Brotherhood” for ANTA, one of the emerging Chinese sportswear companies along with Li-Ning and PEAK who all have plans to make a run at the U.S. market in this coming decade.

Fujian-based ANTA Sports Products Limited was established in 1994 and in recent years has signed official sports contracts with the NBA’s Houston Rockets in 2007 along with its first NBA endorser, Steve Francis. One of the company’s previously used slogans: Keep Moving.

CounterKicks reached adidas regarding Garnett’s new endorsement contract with ANTA with the company issuing a “no comment” on the deal at the present moment.

actually this chinese brands maybe a year or two separated in terms of tech of the popular brands, especially the declining trend of quality shoes made by some leading brands, Anta has a similar tech to adidas in creating a custom shoe for the specific player, its just a matter of time before they catch up. the only problem i got with the chinese brands are their designs, though lining has stpped up with baron’s shoe,,, hopefully better designs come,,, dont underestimate their capabilities, we must realize that most of the shoes released by the big brands are manufactured in china,,,

I really thought KG had settled down, but it looks he’s still got big plans, can’t wait to see what Anta comes up with for him, and if they’ll release his shoes*hint, hint*.

It’s simple economics. Economics being money. They must have paid him a great deal for him to leave Adidas.

Companies like Peak, LiNing and Anta are on the rise but their designs aren’t the best. Aside from LiNing.

you really have to wonder whatdrives KG nowadays, because i can’t figure him out. when he came into the league, he was a nike posterboy, getting some of the nicest sig kicks the swoosh has put out. he leaves after the FP2 KG drops (i still have the OBF gradient blues) and moves on to AND1, where he gets the mad game. he helps put those guys on the map by giving them some cred, then he moves to adidas. those moves were definitely not about money though, since nike could probably throw more money at KG than AND1, and similarly, i am assuming adidas could have potentially outbid anta. in addition to money looking like it wasn’t a problem off the court, he also took paycuts on the court to create cap space for his teams to sign vets.

i wonder what governs his decisions. is it idle boredom? is he still looking for that elusive definitive signature shoe?

Players like Garnett and Kidd are past their prime in their NBA careers. Nike and Adidas are smart not to pay them big bucks for their endorsement.

After a certain point, the brand cache wears off a player and a his worth (endorsement contract) is determined by how much product he can sell. How many Jordan’s are there, right?

I doubt these Chinese companies are throwing out big bucks to sign these guys. The contracts are probably royalty-based deals, which could be huge $ in a basketball appreciating country of 1.4 billion people. The middle class in China is >200 million and growing and 300 million people play basketball!

Who knows…while we may think these guys are past their prime, perhaps the Chinese consumers have a different perspective.

C´mon people…its 34 yo KG…Kidd? Baron Davis?…Pietrus? Nike has LBJ and Kobe, Adidas Dwight, Derrick…name top 10 young players and please tell me if they wear clunky chinese shoes…for one big reason it´s not viable for these companies to sell their shoes in america…ning did it, but…was it really a huge profit the doom shoe?
