BREAKING NEWS: Steve Nash signs a new endorsement deal. Nike responds.

CounterKicks can exclusively confirm that Steve Nash has left Nike and signed with Chinese brand Luyou.

Nike US Media Relations Director Derek Kent issued the following statement to CounterKicks:

“We can confirm Steve Nash is no longer under contract with us. We had a great run with Steve and we wish him all the best. We’re extremely pleased to work with the NBA’s top players like Kobe, LeBron, Durant and Wade, who wear our basketball products, the most innovative in the game today.”

Nash’s decision to endorse a Chinese footwear brand follows in the footsteps of recent headline deals like Kevin Garnett leaving adidas for ANTA.

Adding context, Nash is repped by BDA Sports who has pioneered Chinese endorsement deals for NBA athletes with its clients including Yao Ming and later partnering up Baron Davis and Hasheem Thabeet with Li-Ning.

The Nike and Steve Nash relationship ends after 15 years. Terms of the new Nash and Luyou deal are not yet available.

Why does Anta, Luyou, and Li-Ning damn near all have the same kind of logo? Steve might as well get his money since he is in the twilight of his career and is on a fading team.

Older NBA players all about cleaning up on the late stage cheese that Nike and adidas wouldn’t give them. China brands need the legitimacy of players like Nash to look cool with China youth. World is changing quick with these Chinese shoe brands coming up.

nash during his mvp and near-mvp seasons is the sole reason i started watching the league again after pippen retired. he is basketball in it’s purest form…selfless, creative and team-oriented. in the wake of less defense and more scoring, 81 point performances and dwade throwing himself into players en route to a finals mvp and championship, i’ve been disgusted by what stern has been doing. steve nash is a breath of fresh air in an ego-centric and cut-throat sport. loyalty, fun and team are first on his list and for that, he will always have my respect.

too bad the cradle rock wasn’t readily available, bc my samples see a lot of run time whenever i hit the court. i can’t wait to see what luyou has up it’s sleeve.

Did not see this coming.

Love the Nike statement at the end like “it’s all good, we got Bron, Kobe, Durant and DWade…good luck Steve” Haha

Nike wouldnt pay Nash at this point in his career as much as what a Chinese company could. They need the NBA guys to help sell their shoes and clothes to China kids. Good move for Nash and Luyou to get the money. Read the Nike statement, they got plenty of superstars left. Swoosh aint sweatin nothing.
