Eight men and a woman were charged with peddling approximately $150,000 worth of counterfeit goods, including Nike and Timberland shoes.
From the Chicago Sun-Times:
The Cook County Sheriff’s Police Special Operations Unit began investigating the ring in early March, after receiving a tip from a concerned citizen. Over the course of several weeks, investigators conducted surveillance and undercover purchases, and determined the nine suspects — who were either related or friends — were engaged in illegal counterfeiting sales. Most of the apparel items sold in their stores bore the counterfeit trademarks of Nike, Timberland and Major League Baseball.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, Cook County Detectives raided five locations operated by the ring including: Oak Park Tobacco & More, State Street Discount, North Avenue Discount, Chicago Avenue Discount, Madison Discount Store.
The lesson here for counterfeit pushers is twofold, of course. Don’t sell fake goods in an area where concerned citizens live and don’t sell to undercover investigators.
