CounterKicks Design Competition winners announced.

Creating a flagship level shoe is no easy task. Creating an industry-altering Air Jordan concept is even more formidable. But that’s what our designers in the latest CounterKicks Design Competition were tasked with doing: forming a vision for a speculative Air Jordan game shoe. While none of these design concepts will go into production as the next Air Jordan release obviously (and that cake has been baked for a while, anyways), we do get to gaze at “what if” concepts from aspiring footwear designers to gain an outsiders take on what’s been held as the pinnacle product of the athletic footwear industry.

In the following pages, we present the top 15 CounterKicks concepts, all featured in no particular order or ranking until the last three designs. Final feedback and thoughts for all entrants and onlookers close out the competition on the last page by our esteemed design judges panel composed of Michael DiTullo (Creative Director at frog design, former Brand Jordan/Nike Sportswear designer, and former Design Director Converse Basketball and One Star) and Brett Golliff (Senior Creative Designer at General Motors | Chevrolet Performance, former Designer 1 New Balance Advanced Product & Training SBU) who both graciously took the time to review all contenders and add their own valuable commentary to this exhibition.

Congrats to ___________________ who has earned a $250 gift certificate from competition sponsor Sneakerhead.com along with CounterKicks swag. And a big thanks to all participants who took the time and effort to create a design and submit for this event. More design competitions on the way.

So let’s clear the Air here…

Thanks again to everyone who entered this competition, not only if you made the top 15 cut. We saw a lot of talent and potential. If you didn’t rank, there’s always next competition to improve and you’re certainly welcome to post up your designs too. Give a round to Mike and Brett as well for their design critique. And Brett’s always open to emails too…

Design feedback by Michael DiTullo:
“Most successful designs always came from an honest sense of material performance.”
“Performance footwear for the world’s most demanding athletes must be born from function.”

Design feedback by Brett Golliff:
“It needs a focal point of innovation that makes the user feel like they are getting something completely new.”
“The Air Jordan is more than just a shoe. It is an iconic piece of footwear that every basketball shoe has to live up to; it is the standard in performance footwear.”

“Start with the foot, and build around that.” ~ Tinker Hatfield

Design feedback by AMG:
You guys all need a lesson in functional anatomy and physiology. A shoe is not a car, motorcycle, animal, building, or metaphor. Your rights, privileges, and responsibilities:

The shoe you design has to help an athlete move better!

Cube23, next design competition should be announced very soon. It’s a running theme. We’re going to shoot for briefer time frames I think and just add more comps to the schedule. 4-6 weeks I think is plenty (if you all have other thoughts, drop me a line). If you miss it, there will be a new one right around the corner. Benefit is people get more practice and increased opportunities to get their design work showcased on the front of the site for everyone to check out. Planning some “mini” themes as well, perhaps not footwear based but related.
