Nobody ran like Grete Waitz ran. And nobody won like Grete Waitz won. The Norwegian running icon dominated the New York City Marathon with nine wins between 1978 and 1988, more than any other NYCM runner ever. Her fastest time came during the 1980 event, posting a personal best 2:25:41. But her talent didn’t only show out in the Big Apple. Waitz put in work at the 1983 World Championships in Helsinki, grabbing a gold medal, and at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, finishing with silver.
Waitz succumbed to cancer in April at the age of 57. To honor her life, her achievements and her running legacy, adidas has put together three running models with Norway-inspired colorways. The shoes – adiZero Adios 2 ($115), adiZero Boston 3 ($110), and Supernova Glide 4 ($115) – all sport combinations of red, dark blue and orange, with the Adios 2 featuring Waitz’s marathon times worked into a pattern on the upper.
Just in time for the 2011 ING New York City Marathon on November 6, adidas will be selling the shoes at its brand marathon booth as well as at its sport performance store in SoHo. All profits from the shoes will go to AKTIV Against Cancer, the charity Waitz founded in Oslo, Norway in November 2007. Pics of the shoes, as well as an adidas tribute video to Waitz, below.
