American legend holds that it took five storks to deliver Paul Bunyan as an infant. That his laughter as a child broke every window in the house and that he created the Grand Canyon simply by dragging his ax along behind him. Now whether or not you believe these exploits happened, or that PB even existed, depends upon how trusty your suspension of belief is, how tall your imagination stands. Turns out New Balance, the last major athletic shoe company to manufacture in the U.S., subscribes to that uniquely American ‘what if’ experience of the tall tale.
This is the New Balance 574 “Paul Bunyan”, a limited edition “American Tall Tales” tribute shoe dedicated to the world’s most famous lumberjack. As you can see from the photos, this one’s done up in true woodsy, outdoorsy, folksy colors, with brown suede, cream mesh insets, red trim, and flannel lining. A gum sole caps the look. And yes, these are made in the U.S.A., as noted in the heel stitching and the slimmed-out toe box (China-made 574′s always have a fatter forefoot profile). Before this release, you’ve only recently been able to procure U.S.A.-made 574′s through the brand’s customization program.
The New Balance 574 Paul Bunyan now at select spots like Zappos.com. $100.
