Nike Unveils Its Touted “Revolutionary Product”: Introducing Nike+ FuelBand

Fueling up.

Athlete interaction with gear is way past the days of simply choosing the right clothing or best cushioned shoe. It’s about the numbers these days, tangible indicators that level with you any given second about how far you’ve come toward reaching your goals, and how far you’ve yet to go.

Taking this instant feedback to the most personal level seen to date, the innovators in Beaverton, Oregon introduce the Nike+ FuelBand – a wristband that keeps intimate tabs on your movement all day long with the aim of getting you in tune with yourself and athletic achievements. It’s what Nike has been drumming up as “a revolutionary product designed for all kinds of playmakers” in one video.

“The Nike+ FuelBand is a way for Nike to further evolve the exciting possibilities of merging the physical and digital worlds,” said Nike, Inc. President & CEO Mark Parker at the Nike+ FuelBand launch event in New York. “Nike has always been about inspiring athletes, and the Nike+ FuelBand will help motivate them in a simple, fun and intuitive way.”

The FuelBand gathers and displays 4 key metrics for you: time, calories, steps, and NikeFuel, a new measurement that acts as a scoring reward system to drive you to do more. That system is based on oxygen kinetics which allows for a normalized score regardless of body composition. You can also get a calorie count to correspond with this data for comparison. As the FuelBand is worn, a three-axis accelerometer collects data and puts in into NikeFuel terms so you can measure your progress.

When time comes to find out what all of your data means, the FuelBand can be synced with the Nike+ website, through USB, or wirelessly through Bluetooth to a free iPhone app that records daily activity.

The Nike+ FuelBand will be available for limited pre-sale today at 5pm EST at NikeStore.com with wider retail rollout this spring. Retail is $149.

FuelBand can also be followed by its new Twitter handle @NikeFuel.

Measuring calories, steps and time is cool but I’d like to measure speed, vert and acceleration. Probably MiCoach Basketball will a better choice for me.

Kinda disappointing, for a ‘revolutionary product’ I expected more speciality stats, for athletes.

Not a more general ‘for everybody’ that wants to get more active, calorie-counter/pedometer.

MiCoach is def the better choice for me. I want to know more info then a basic workout. People think Adidas is not on par with Nike but I beg to differ, prime example here. In my opinion MiCoach is more revolutionary than Nike’s FuelBand

I dunno, Im into the idea, and the slick appearance, however, what about hitting the weights? Well it calculate my body against additional resistance? or is that irrelevant to this thing?
