Allen Iverson came home to hero’s welcome at last night’s Celtics-Sixers Game 6. AI geared up in his Reebok Questions, visited with Commissioner Stern and fans, presented the game ball to referee Joey Crawford, and then retreated to a luxury box to watch his old squad force a Game 7.

The white and red Reebok Question releases tomorrow to spots like Reebok.com, Jimmy Jazz, Shoe Palace, Shiekh’s, Villa, Puffer Reds, Sportie LA, Shoe Palace, Expressions, Shoe City, DTLR, Walter’s, Mr. R Sports, Kicks USA, UBIQ, and Atmos. $125 retail.

Man. Personally, I’d love to see this cat get into the gym, then adding about ten pounds of lean muscle, getting incredibly healthy, then make a serious run one more time. Unfortunately, especially from those pics, dude looks as if he’s put in too much time in with the bottle over the years, and that is a shame. It’s all over his face.

If Kobe, Ray and Nash, who each came out in the 96 draft with Iverson, can still play at somewhat of a high level, AI surely can still do something productive on the court. I wish he’d give it one last serious go while he still can.

I just would much rather him put the work in and at least show as much effort as Stef if not more before he tries to have his shoe company help rally a worthless effort to get a back stabbing cry baby back in the L. Com’ on son…Get on NBATV and be productive like Shaq (a real legend). You burned too many bridges and chances to ever step on a NBA court again. Its over, evolve and let John Wall be the future. Lookin kinda thirsty right now son.

“are we talking about practice? practice?”

“gimma one (insert personal accomplishment here) that comes off the bench” (x10)

AI needs to get off that self-entitlement tip. whatever he’s done for the game, he’s definitely been paid and compensated in full for it. if he wants to get his hands on more of that NBA money, he needs to actually be good enough for the NBA.

Nash and Kobe have insane health regiments and work-out routines, and Ray has a jumpshot that kept him in the league. AI feels no need for practice, and has been a notoriously poor volume shooter…so that ’96 draft comparison only works if Iverson had the work ethic of Nash and Kobe, or the consistent J of Ray.

No it works because of skill level. Those ’96 draft guys are still effective because their skills haven’t dropped off. Health regiments or not, they’re all still older guys who’ve lost a step or three physically. But they bring the games they’ve mastered to the court and succeed when many of the current generation (some stars excluded) are not nearly as refined.

That why I think Iverson could still be good if he simply got in the best shape possible at his age. Maybe not Kobe/Ray/Nash good but enough to spend what NBA capital he has left in a positive way instead of letting his sloppy last few years stain his legacy.

The issue with Iverson lies in the fact that he never improved his game, his fundamentals, only relying upon his athleticism instead of intellect. This is not to say that he was a stupid player, but what gives a player that longevity, is what lies beneath the cap.

He never learned to be a point guard, as in a REAL point guard, accepting the role of a facilitator, getting the team into their offensive sets while not looking for the first shot, Running a team ala Rondo, Nash, Paul, and he is a defensive liability, especially since he is so slight. He can be posted up by larger point men and shooting guards with ease, especially at this stage of his game.

This is why I hope that he gets into a gym, rededicates himself to his fitness, getting stronger, then being an off the bench point guard for some team that is loaded with vets, and a coach that knows how to deal with a personality like that of Iverson.

Someone like Doc Rivers can handle him, then has a history of dealing with difficult Point Guards, such as Sam Cassell later in his career, and presently Rajon Rondo.

Exactly. I mean, what separates the elite players from the simply athletic is the cerebral part of the game. Constant students of the game acknowledge that a time will come when they won’t be the highest jumpers and fastest runner, and that’s where constant improvement and that will to better oneself comes into play. AI has never shown a desire to change his play style to accommodate his aging body. He wants to hoist 35 shots a game in his mid 30′s as he did in his early 20′s…that’s how he’s played and that’s how he wants to continue to play. I mean, dang, the man’s in his mid-30′s and still dressing like he was a Hoya. Times change, but sadly, it looks like Iverson is still in an age where throwbacks and pinwheel caps are in style. .
