How do you follow up on a string of platinum records that were almost universally praised for being fresh and traditional at the same time? Probably make another one. But it’s not that simple. Looking to past achievements for future inspiration is only one part of the creative formula. Shoes, like hit albums, often have a mass of hardcore followers who love them for myriad reasons. The shoe designer has to emcee these reasons while pushing the product forward. It’s a daunting task but New Balance Senior Designer Andrew Nyssen did it — with 99X series fans’ full attention — and lived to tell. We sat down with the creator of the brand new 990v3 to find out how he made the shoe new yet kept it familiar, how the 99X series led up to the 990v3, his thoughts on “Made In The USA”, and more in our latest Running Now installment.

Really great to learn the process to create the shoe. I never heard about the blind shoe tests with the glasses, it makes sense, neat to hear those little details!

The 990 update looks great. Like the new sole unit Andrew drew on it (release version does a nice blend of old and new though.

Made in the Usa! Great company, great interview!
