Dr. J Makes House Call At Converse x Ubiq Philly Block Party

Any time you can get Dr. J to your party, you just gotta. Last weekend, Converse and Ubiq threw a block party to celebrate the arts and the launch of the Converse Pro Leather collection. Here’s what happened…

This past weekend, CONVERSE celebrated local street culture, basketball, music, and art with two events in Philadelphia – a special retail launch at Philadelphia’s premier sneaker retailer UBIQ and Converse Block Party.

On Friday, August 3 2012, Converse hosted an event at UBIQ to launch the Converse Pro Leather collection in Philadelphia. For the event, UBIQ was converted to showcase the new Pro Leather collection, along with a retrospective of the shoe debuted in 1976. Guests enjoyed the event with a live music performance from hip-hop artist Stalley and music spun by DJ Young Guru. Special guests included Hip-Hop artists Asher Roth, Chill Moody, Young Savage and boxer Henry Lundy. NBA legend Julius “Dr. J” Erving, who is no stranger to Philadelphia, made a special appearance at the event. Taking to the stage, Dr. J greeted guests and spoke of his connection to both the Philadelphia 76ers and the Pro Leather, saying: “I had on sneakers when I played, sneakers when I practiced. Each and every time I had on my sneakers, I had on my Converse”.

Stalley and Dr. J also appeared at the Converse Block Party held on Saturday, August 4, on 52nd Street and Market Street. The event featured live music performances by Chill Moody, Young Savage, Converse Rubber Tracks recording artists Grey Sky Appeal and Moe Pope. The event ended with a special performance by hip- hop artist Stalley with special guests Beanie Segal, Freeway and Young Chris. In between performances, dance groups Dynamic Rockers and 360 Flava and double dutch team Jumpers in Command entertained the crowd. Attendees were also given the chance to customize Converse t-shirts, sample local food and participate in pickup basketball games.
