Yesterday, a fresh wave of third-rate guesswork posing as “breaking news” made the rounds of the Internet. It even slithered its way onto ESPN Insider today.
The general thesis is true. Most of everything else “reported” on is false.
We can confirm that Dwyane Wade is still under contract with Jordan Brand. That endorsement contract has not yet expired — not today, not this week.
This also means there’s no Li-Ning deal finalized yet. We can confirm this too, as of an hour ago.
At some point in the next few weeks, before the start of the new NBA season, the smart money bet is Wade becomes a Li-Ning athlete. But we’re not there yet.
We can also confirm from multiple sources that Jordan Brand has no further intentions of retaining Dwyane Wade’s services and Wade will indeed sign a new footwear and apparel deal with a company outside the Nike Inc. family.
Publicly speaking though, Jordan Brand has issued a “no comment” on this story at this time.
So this situation is a little like “confirming” and “breaking” news that there’s going to be a new Jay-Z album where he raps about money, fast cars, and slanging crack back in ’88. Great detective work, you guys. You can guess the general (and by now obvious) motif, and you might be right, but please stop yourself there. In talking with a few of the actual insiders who have intimate knowledge of the Wade contract situation, it’s readily clear that some of you are pulling your fantasy news scoops from where the sun doesn’t shine.
