If you ventured a guess a few weeks back as to what the D Rose 3 “Christmas” shoe was going to look like, you probably felt pretty confident that the shoe’s inspiration would exist somewhere within the orbit of the holiday’s traditionally red and green atmosphere.
Then these photos showed up. Not so traditional, right? Well, it’s definitely the yuletide Rose for this year, just in an unexpectedly wry direction. Wry in “The Nightmare Before Christmas” sort of way, the 1993 stop motion movie that only Tim Burton would dream up. Maybe dream isn’t the right word.
The first thing you notice about the shoe is the trippy anodized purple upper, an ideal match with the movie’s promotional stills and otherworldly feel. Then perhaps you pick up on the black and white striped laces that sync with Christmas-hijacking lead Jack Skellington’s pinstriped suit, the speckled midsole and 3-Stripes that glow in the dark a la moonlight, and ghostly translucent outsole.
But underneath the aesthetics lies another twist to the shoe’s story. The prospect of being embarrassed on Christmas Day by the serious game of a player like Derrick Rose is enough to cause opposing teams an unpleasant mental plague as they sleep during the hours before December 25th.
