Ever look back on MJ tearing up the mid-’80s in the very modestly cushioned Air Jordan 1 and wonder how he did all that with those? Fast forward XX8 years and DeMar DeRozan is doing the same thing — NBA ball, in AJ 1, only this time it’s the retro version. How do they do it? They’re world-class athletes that can handle it, that’s how. Still impressive.
And more impressive is the fact that the now Rudy Gay-girded Toronto Raptors are expanding their Air Jordan retro footprint. DeMar and forward Amir Johnson have been holding that down for awhile now but Rudy shows up, boom, Air Jordan 6 “Carmines” his first game. Last night with the Heat in town, DeMar in AJ 1, Amir in AJ 5, Rudy in AJ 12 and reserve guard Alan Anderson in the Carmines. Lost 100-85 to Miami anyway but the point is, maybe Jordan Brand needs to come up with a Team Jordan just for retros. The Raps are clearly leading candidates. Just ply them with the latest hot old school J’s and let them work. Fans will be wondering what the Team Jordan Retro is going to wear next. We’re already doing that. And it will add even more excitement around the brand, and what brand can afford to refuse excitement in this economy?
Mike Krzyzewski has always said it’s a bad idea to have a team within a team, how it can foment disunity. Don’t think he was talking about shoes, though, so this idea is ok.
Anyway, back to NBA Kicks. These shoes, plus many more gems ahead.
