Evolution of a great player, evolution of (so far) a great shoe line. The Nike KD signature has represented affordable performance from the first shoe. For the KD V, we see an increase in price and technology, but do we also get an increase in performance?

***

“It has AIR MAX in the HEEL!!!!!” If that wasn’t your first thought when you saw the KD V then you were a 5%-er. Everyone, as soon as the first sample pics leaked, was focused on the Air Max. Then came the ankle cut. An almost true high top. Since we were used to seeing 5/8th or lower cut from KD we were blasted into the ’80s a bit with this look. Opinions were formed and they weren’t good. Then the colorways came and, as with most Nike sig shoes, opinions turned complete 180s. Suddenly, this was the hottest shoe Nike had put out since the LeBron X. I, however, only had one question – can I play in them?

I really was diggin the look of the shoe until I tried them on. They felt like the thinnest least cushioned pieces of garbage I had ever put on my feet. They run narrow and long which is not a good combo cause then you can’t even size up to deal with the width issue. I felt like the cushioning was non existant! Seriously felt like I was walking barefoot on concrete. I really wanted to like these. I even did an ID pair to go along with my OKC Aways. I ended up selling em both for half of what I paid just to get rid of em

Jr – like I said, I haven’t been a fan of the Fuse or all-Sprintweb shoes either as a whole (just got the Crazy Fast and they feel like these). But the shoe broke in well and began flexing pretty well pretty quickly, probably because they were thinner. The first wear was the worst since the BB4. Made me almost cry. But te cushioning broke loose and all was good. I wouldn’t ask you to try them again but you may have given up to quick.

Duke – do you wear your ball shoes (that you play in) outside often? My ball shoes only see the hardwood, change room, and the path leading to the change room.

Great review, I knew they’d be good(because structurally the KD’s all follow 1 blue-print, and they got it right from the KD 1 basically).

They should’ve gone for a better look though, I really don’t like how they alternate a cool-design, with a generic-design.

Break in is the key with these otherwise you’ll be returning a great shoe . No heel slip at all for me

Long – I play 99% indoors. I occasionally play at the park but nothing more than 3 on 3 or some 21. Texas outdoor ball leaves a lot to be desired – when it isn’t freezing we have 50mph winds or it is 110.

Nene, I think the design would have been much more striking if the Hyperdunk 2012 had not come first and stolen the swoosh in the toe. I love the heel and the lacing but the high front low cut ankle is to prevelant these days.

The ankle-cuff definitely could’ve changed a lot if it were more regular mid-cut, like the Foamposite silhouette, since the fuse likes to play off the posite.

Great review Duke. It’s good to know that break in is the key for these because they are not comfortable out of the box. The couple of times I’ve tried them on my regular size feels long with the correct width. When I go down 1/2 size the length is right but they feel too narrow. As these break in does the width loosen up at all?

As for the design, I like the front of the shoes and agree a different ankle cut would be nice on these. I’m really tired of the high tongue and low Achilles cut on shoes. Oh well, maybe next year the design will be better.

I should clarify my question haha. I meant wearing them outdoors for errands as per your statement “I wore them everywhere the next three days – mall, Wally World, even church on Sunday night.” Do you wear your shoes to run errands and also use them for ball?

Just came from a tournament in Harlem, teams from Baltimore, NYC, and Boston repped. The shoe of choice for many of the young players, ages 10 from 16 was this shoe. I don’t know if it is due to economics, or due to the popularity of Durant, but this shoe was being worn big time by those players, about eight teams in total. One kid from the Baltimore team had on a pair of the Under Armour Charge in Hot Pink, as Under Armour was repped as well by a few players.

S – I would stay with the longer shoe. The Fuse doesn’t stretch at all but it will break in and learn your flex points similar to a Posite shoe.

Long – sorry – misinterpreted that. Yeah, I wear them everywhere. Not bragging, but with as many shoes as I get I have to wear them as much as possible for break in purposes. I try to get at least six good days playing before I review, which puts me at only two weeks in a shoe. Plus these just caught so many looks I got a little fanboy-ish in them.

Mede- it is a very versatile shoe and compared to Nike digs it is cheap. Lebrons are so limited in special color ways and cost way too much for most normal consumers. The tech an the colors in the KD scream team shoe and of course KD is the coolest cat out there for Nike right now. Love hearing UA was repped out there. There fall line is looking nice.

Playing in my CK x Li Ning Villains now. Don’t sleep on Li Ning like I did for the past years. This shoe is a beast. Next up for review is the Rose 3.5 then the Jorsan XX8, followed by K1X Anti Gravity then the Crazy Fast. Got to get on it…
