The SportsONESource sneaker sales numbers for January 2013 are out, revealing somewhat predictable results with a slight twist.
First, the predictable results. Air Jordan 13 “Bred” took the top spot as fans of this golden era J, and black and red Jordans in general, gobbled them up across the size range. Air Jordan 5 “Fire Red” nestled in at number 2, boosted by high model popularity despite the very late 1/26 release date. Then there’s the diehard consistent standbys Timberland 10061 Boot, white Nike Air Force 1 Low, and Nike Air Monarch IV filling in the 6, 7, and 9 spots. They’re top ten sellers all day long. Nothing surprising so far.
The twist is that LeBron X “Prism” and KD V nabbed the 3 and 4 best-selling spots over number 5 Air Jordan 1 “Bulls.” AJ 1 as you might recall dropped on January 5th, giving the shoe nearly a full month to clear out at retail if needed. Still couldn’t overcome those Prisms and KDs. Hmm.
Some more interesting tidbits from the report:
January is the second smallest month of the year.
Sales for the month grew by nearly 20%, one of the largest monthly gains we’ve seen since we been keeping history on the data.
Sales on the Internet (in the retailers we measure) were 11% of the total and grew more than a third.
Sales in Athletic Specialty Men’s sales grew almost 25%, an eye popping increase, while women’s improved in the low teens and kids in the high teens.
Jordan sales were up about 85% and share leapt 850 basis points to 55%. Nike brand Basketball grew more than half. adidas Basketball declined in the high singles.
Thanks as always to SportsONESource analyst Matt Powell for the sales breakdown.
