Despite mounting obstacles to keep the Sacramento Kings — the latest of which finds billionaire Ron Burkle’s financial backing on the outside looking in — Mayor Kevin Johnson was able to share some good news this week. Fila is bringing back his shoe.
The KJ7 made the former Phoenix Suns star point guard, as he told reporters during a press conference at Sacramento’s Downtown Plaza on Monday, “the first player in the NBA to wear Fila.”
Fila plans to release the KJ7 in “Suns” and “Kings” inspired colorways next winter.
Per mayoral protocol, Johnson isn’t permitted to accept royalties from the shoe’s sales so Fila will instead make a $25,000 donation to Sacramento Public Policy Foundation and a $25,000 donation to the team dedicated to completing a new Kings arena called Think Big Sacramento.
Basketball shoe fans remember Johnson wearing the Converse Run N’ Slam during the Suns’ 62-20 title run 1992-93 season.
