Rose will never be the same? Never that. D Rose is back, looks as good or better than ever, and the Rose 4.0 is there to elevate his game to new heights. How will it work for you?
I admit, I have liked (dang near loved) every shoe Derrick Rose has worn in his NBA career. TS Creator, Cut Creator, Supernatural Creator, and all of the Roses from 1.0 through 3.5. My favorite shoe ever was the Supernatural Creator. For me, being older than 99% of the NBA, I find it hard to root in an MJ hero worship style for any player now. However, Derrick Rose brings the excitement and fearlessness I can remember seeing in Jordan, especially pre-1991. Rose has embraced Chicago more than any athlete since Jordan, and the love is reciprocal. That said, I love everything about D Rose the player. Humble, aggressive, talent, major work ethic, quiet and cool. I get the split of his on- and off-court approach, the two sides, the Yin and Yang. I try to be that way myself. Off the court we are cool, on the court I am busting everyone I line up against. So I “get” the D Rose 4.
Ever since the first samples and pictures appeared last spring the hate has been constant towards the 4 – and I get that also. So when the first actual pictures of the shoe appeared, and opinions started changing, I got that, too. Reminded me of that former Chicago player and his new releases – hated until Mike wore them kicks on-court, and then the lines formed.
On to the shoe (thanks, MB, for the media pack, always appreciated). We get SPRINTFRAME, SPRINTWEB, Crazyquick outsole (I refuse to call it Puremotion until they go back to my pods), GEOFIT ankle padding and, not seen in a LONG while in the basketball line, adiprene. Sounds like a beast, and my first impressions opening the box didn’t change that thought. I had read some comments on the materials feeling cheap or “not premium” enough for Rose – face it, there is no premium today for performance. Premium is saved for Dunks and Yeezys. The Rose 3 had better upper materials, in my opinion the best upper materials seen since the age of Fly-Sprint-Fuse began, at least from Jordan, Nike and adidas. The one thing I noticed right away was the finish of the upper. In the right light it has a crushed velvet look, like a Good Times van wall. Next was the toe tape. I know why it is there, and the shape has a Taurus the bull shape, but actually being able to see the stitching under the tape takes off cool points for me. Back to the heel – GEOFIT forms the main structure and feels completely different than we have seen before, showing a nice evolution from the 1.0 to now. With molded areas to fit the ankle and heel perfectly, the comfort level is elevated from the detached collar first seen three years ago. Finally, that SPRINTFRAME heel counter. A diamond geometric pattern finishes off the heel’s aggressive appearance with subtleness. Cool stuff. Let’s play…
