As I sit and think on this past year, I am reminded of… nahhh, forget that. 2013 killed any notions I had about shoe companies being lackadaisical in design and innovation. It didn’t matter where you looked or what you wore, chances are you put something new – design, idea, or technology – on your feet. What was the best of the best? I have some ideas…

Comeback Of The Year: I would love to say D Rose or Kobe but that just seems cruel right now. And besides, we deal with shoes, not the wearer, so that made no sense at all. Looking at all spectrums of the sneaker world, I would have to say Reebok had a MAJOR comeback, just not in performance. Their retro lines killed all other brands this year, but more on that later.

For performance, I have to go with Under Armour, specifically the Anatomix Spawn. After the complete circus the basketball line turned into last year (the only shoe you can remember is the Charge, and not because it was good), things looked real dark, especially after the way the company blew us away the two years before that. Well, with the Anatomix, I feel they got back to real design – fit, cushioning, durability, and color ways were all on point and above most other offerings. And to bring all of that together at the price point they did was a major step. Signing Steph puts them back in the game with the top athletes as well. Now, let’s see what they do with it.

Most Fun: This was a tough one – the hardest category I have to pick. On one hand, the tried and true brands came with some real heat and had some serious performers. On the other, the lesser-known brands also brought a level of production up to speed with any of the Big Three shoes. For this one, I rank them –

5. K1X Anti-Gravity
4. adidas D Rose 4
3. Nike Hyperdunk 2013
2. Air Jordan XX8

And, number one most surprising shoe for me this year – PEAK Team Lightning TP9. If you haven’t tried this shoe, you are missing out. Cushioning, quality, durability, traction – one of the top shoes in almost every category and just a fun, fast shoe on the court. Really reminds me of the Jordan CP3 series – a little heavier than the CP3.VI, but it is a shoe you just lace up and run in.

Great list, Duke, and seeing the XX8 topping your list just reminded me of how depressing it is to not be able to score a pair of it, or the SE, myself :)

Thanks!

Great job duke.. so did you actually play in the Lebron XI?
And man, your list just makes me wonder if I should grab the Team Lightnings or wait for the TP1

Sam – I did play in the XI and I liked the shoe over all. I was late with my pair and the review would have been real late, so I skipped them. Fit my foot great and I thought the cushioning broke in nice after the lunar broke down a bit and let the zoom take over.

Personally, I would wait for the TP1. My pair is on the way but the fit is supposed to be improved. Unless you can get a good cheap deal on the TP9 and want to try them out first.

And I know I left the Lebron XI off this list – it was just too late in the year to add it in personally. And personally, I also just liked the shoes mentioned better. It was ranked the best Sig based on sales and crossover appeal as well as design – I just felt these ten played better.

Great list, but unfortunately I didn’t try any of the hoops shoes on any of the lists this year.

However, two tennis shoes stood out for me. One was the Federer’s Zoom Vapor Tour 9, a serious shoe. So serious, serious enough for both hoops and tennis, also the Adidas Barricade 7, which featured that same versatility.

I hope you enjoyed playing in all those kicks, as it must have been a treat to do those comparisons.

Mede – I thought about those Vapors for ball. I still don’t see much difference between low top basketball and tennis honestly. Same lateral, maybe the up and down impact protection would differ. Traction and support should be good.

I like the diversity of the list, Duke. Exceptional. I do agree with you on the XX8. I was fortunate enough to get 7 pair. Different colorways of course. The comfort of the shoe is incredible and I haven’t felt anything like it before or since. Hopefully, the XX9 will continue to push the envelope.

Great list duke. on the list, i’ve only tried the m9, the tp9, lebron 11 and the superfly 2 and the crazyquick, i’d say that based on that short list, i’d put the melo 9 on top, but that’s my list.
