Though the Nike LeBron 11 Elite is widely recognized for attention-stirring design, its superstar namesake was able to redirect some of that spotlight on Saturday night to humbly honor Ebony Nettles-Bey.
Before tip-off of the Heat-Bucks game, LeBron James personalized his right shoe with the hashtag “#CancerWho” and “Ebony=Strong” for Nettles-Bey. News of the 16-year-old Milwaukee area student athlete’s battle with Stage 4 cancer and desire to meet James quickly circulated Twitter over the last few months, thanks to a #LeBronMeetEbony campaign started by her Verona High School girls basketball teammates.
Nettles-Bey’s wish was fulfilled beyond expectation as she met and chatted with James, led the Heat onto the court for warmups, hoisted jumpers with James by her side, stood with the Heat during the National Anthem, and posed for photos with James and numerous Heat players after the game.
“Basketball has put me in position that I will never take for granted,” James later commented through his @kingjames Instagram account. “Being a hero to this girl Ebony is the reason that I keep going every single day!”
James finished the game with 13 points, seven rebounds, and two assists in 30 minutes on the floor, as the Heat wrapped the Bucks, 88-67, to complete the memorable tribute.
