Here’s a look at the the adidas JS Leather Wings 2.0 “Marble”. Created by designer Jeremy Scott, the adidas heritage silhouette is embellished with Icarus-like leather wings at the ankle collar. How many years have you been designing? What is your career history?
I have been designing for about nineteen years. I started with a company called Ball’n in high school and from there after graduation went to work for a company named Two Hype doing Reebok and 96 Olympic gear. After that I went to work for Puma for about a year before getting a call from adidas to do basketball when Kobe came on board. I spent about two years there and got a call from And1 and did that for another two years before going to Skechers to do the Skechers and Skechers Sport lines. I spent about four years with them before leaving and starting my own design firm with clients ranging from Pony, Dunk.net, And1, Converse, and Oakley. I did that for a few years before returning to Skechers to do Marc Ecko and 310 Motoring projects. From there I moved on to do work for Dada and P. Miller until starting my first company, Blacksheep. Two years past and the Protege project fell in my lap so I helped start that and presently have three lines in development.

What motivates you?
Family is my motivator. I am a father now and I work hard to make sure they don’t have to grow up like I did. It wasn’t the worst but it wasn’t the best so every design gives them a better chance than I had.

What inspires you?
It’s funny I am not really a conventional designer, I am more of an organic kinda guy. I never went to school to learn how to work my skills so my inspiration comes from many different things. I have been inspired by everything from flashes of light to tooth brushes. Music inspires me so much, just the beats and my mood. Where I am in life and everything around me also inspires me and the products I work on. I surf the web and watch a lot of T.V. and videos and read a lot of magazines because I realize that’s what the average consumer does. I will go to malls and talk to the guys who work in the stores because they see all the trends to get input. I will then create like five shoes in my head and do my “Beautiful Mind” thing for a day or two then hit the Illustrator and just spit it out. I really don’t sketch much anymore because the shoes are just in my head.

Where has design taken you?
Design has taken me to every place in the world but Alaska and Africa. I am on like my third passport and my eighth state. I love it!!!

What is “good design” in your opinion?
Anything I will pay my own money for. Anything that makes me think or leaves me in awe. Anything that makes me appreciate the process that it takes to create a product. Good design should inspire you to want to do better in order to get it. A lot of that has been lost in our industry to the numbers game. Companies would rather gamble on keeping costs low than creating good products. This is so sad, which is why you have to keep creativity and business in the proper perspective in order to survive.

What is your creative process?
My creative process is kind of different. I will get an idea in my head and work on it for a few days then just sit down and spit it out on the computer. I really don’t sketch or draw much anymore because I just sit down and bang shoes out for hours at a time. Being creative shouldn’t have limitations, it can come and go at anytime so when it’s there you should immerse yourself in it and enjoy it. What’s going on around you is so important to the creative process. I hear and have lived horror stories working in companies where the design area is like an accounting firm. In my opinion that’s just not good for a designer and the creative process. Get out and breathe and live it and feel it, or why do it!!!

How would you describe your design style?
My design style is all about function first then solving how to make it work and look good. I was once told that “Form Follows Function.” I always try to look at the Function then wrap the style around it. If it ain’t sexy it just don’t work for me. I try to make my style as sexy as possible without sacrificing the function. Sometimes I hit and sometimes I miss badly but I learn from each project. I also would say that my style is a direct interpretation of life and the things in and around it. If I buy a nice car or see things on a great trip it reflects in my work.

What aspects of your own experiences are reflected in your design (if at all)?
Every design is different. There are times when I can put my fingerprints all over a product and then there are times when I have to step back and let the powers that be run it. However for every product it’s just important to know how to pick your battles. What may not make it on one shoe may become the centerpiece of another.

What is the difference between you and your designs during the beginning of your career as a designer and you as a designer now?
In the beginning everything was so personal. I didn’t know how to choose my battles and I was kind of my worst enemy. With maturity comes the understanding that you can only take a product so far. When working on a shoe you have to realize its a company thing and its like being a parent because you take your kids so far then they have to go off to school and let others help you. When I was young I didn’t understand that you couldn’t get so emotionally attached to your work once it gets to a certain point. Also you have to know when to understand it’s about the customer and the brand, and not your ego.

How does your environment affect your design?
I have to be in an environment that breeds creativity. As I said before I have worked in places like Skechers, adidas, And1 and Oakley to name a few that make the creative process amazing!!! Then there have been some that don’t understand and appreciate the creative mind and process. As a designer if you feel like you work at an accounting firm your creativity becomes a job and not a dream. That is the worst!!! I keep music, magazines, Internet and television around me at all times so I can be an emotional sponge. It keeps the creative mind at ease and makes the process flow and constantly going. There are times when you just don’t have a clue what to do next and you have to get outside of your four walls and just breathe a bit. Get out and see the world and get a different perspective. As a designer it should not be a job, it should be what you love to do with a paycheck as a bonus. Have fun, man.

What has design taught you?
Design has taught me patience, respect, self-awareness and responsibility. More importantly it’s made me understand the importance of staying competitive and hungry. I always tell people that you’re only as good as your last shoe. You have to understand that first comes the consumer and the direction of the brand. Over time you will get a chance to leave your D.N.A. or mark on the business. However you have to get the job done first so pick your battles and more importantly have fun. You can sell a million shoes one year and thirty-thousand the next so stay hungry because you are truly only as good as your last shoe.

adidas was an amazing opportunity I was given years ago. I was hired to do basketball footwear design just when Kobe Bryant, Jermaine O’Neal and Antoine Walker came on board. I remember being so excited because adidas basketball at that point was a clean slate. Our five man design team was brand new and we had very high expectations. I was just happy to be there and finally feel like I had a chance to be involved with a major player.

Some of the best stories I could remember were my trips overseas with adidas. My boss told me to get a passport done so I could fly to China and Germany. Now when you work for companies like adidas all you have to really do is go to Kinkos and take a picture because H.R. will handle the rest. I remember dreading the thought of being on a airplane for like fourteen hours and thinking I would die sitting in coach with some horrible seat. I had been to China before with another company and had to do that and it was horrible!!! When we got on the plane, I was headed to coach when the flight attendant told me my seat was up front!!! Now my team had made this trip before so they were used to business class but me… I was going nuts!!! I felt like a rockstar sitting in my chair drinking my champagne and watching whatever movie I wanted!!! I remember looking out of my window and being able to actually see where day and night seperate. It still to this day was one of the most amazing things I have ever seen.

The flight attendant came over and turned my chair into a bed and I was so excited I still couldnt sleep. The guys I worked with were wide awake also sketching so we stayed up a while longer and just tossed around ideas. The thing that was so cool about adidas when I was there was we really didnt care what everybody else was doing. Competition was higher between categories than it was with other companies. We knew when we landed we had to make a statement to all the other adidas groups that we were working just as hard if not harder to put out the best adidas product. That fourteen hour flight was more like a strategy and design session.

Upon landing we went through customs, cleared the airport, and headed to a jet boat to go to our hotel in mainland China. We got to the hotel and headed to our rooms and I couldn’t sleep because my timing was off. The next day we got into a mini van and headed to the factory. There are some beautiful cities in China and we passed them all on the way to the factory. We were driving around for hours and all of a sudden the road disappeared and we were driving on a dirt road. The whole trip took like two hours!!! Man we passed some crazy stuff on that road like three people on a motorcycle carrying bags and drifting cows in the middle of the path.

We finally made it to the factory and it looked like a military base. They had armed guards and dorms, and a big wall surrounding the factory. We were escorted into a room and all of our shoes were sitting there on a table laid out for us to review and fix. adidas had an in-house factory back in Portland so we started the uppers there and sent them to the factory with our specs so by the time we got there we were able to be far ahead in development on some of our shoes. We sat for hours and worked on the shoes together figuring out the direction of the line and what we needed to do. The factories are huge and most of the workers actually live in dorms on the factory grounds so we hung out with them for a second and got a tour. After that it was off to dinner with the owner of the factory.

Now dinner with the factory owners is always fun!!! You sit at a big table with all the big guys in the company and eat and drink for hours getting to know them and learning about their culture. I was introduced to all kinds of new foods and also rice wine!!! Now I’m a pretty good drinker by legend however that rice wine was a whole other animal. They have these cool drinking rituals like you always let others pour your drink. When you drink you hold your glass with one hand and your wrist with the other and cheer GAN BEI!!! Well about five bottles and about fifty GAN BEIs later we were smokin cigars and having one of the best times of my life!!! Everyone was like slow down Stokes but I remember thinking this is way too much fun so lets keep the party goin!!! We gained a lot of respect that evening because when we were done we got up and walked out without anyone embarrassing themselves due to their drinking. I remember asking my PLM (product line manager) if I drank too much and he put his arm around me and said,”You did good man but you better be ready to get up and get to work.”

7AM is a bitch after an Asian factory dinner and some jet lag. Man I remember feeling like my head was gonna explode and how was I going to survive two hours in a mini van with a hour of that turning into a dirt road adventure. We made it to the factory and got to work and the factory owner came in the room and looked so surprised to see us all there after a night of GAN BEI insanity. We continued working through the day and went to lunch and ate a meal that I’m sure PETA would kill me if I told you what it was. Lets just say that some of the team after eating it couldn’t look at a certain family member again without feeling bad. After lunch we went back to work then it was off to the hotel to get cleaned up for dinner.

Dinner that evening was pretty much filled with the same guys however there was one new guy that was there that we didn’t recognize. As we ate and started drinking he seemed to single me out and GAN BEI me more than anyone in the room. I’m South Side Chicago to the day I die so I was not going to be taken out in any battle!!! We went GAN BEI for GAN BEI for hours and finally I grabbed a half full bottle and yelled GAN BEI!!! He respectfully bowed out and we all laughed and kept going strong. The best part was just getting to know these guys and share an understanding for the cultural differences we had. The owner of the factory took me out on the balcony and showed me where he grew up from afar and told me he made it from there and now he is a very rich man. I explained where I grew up on Chicago’s lower south side and told him someday I would like to do the same. We pulled a puff on our cigars and he told me he was sure someday I would.

7AM was beginning to really piss me off. The ride to the factory was as brutal as ever!!! However we were adidas Basketball so we were not gonna let anyone think we were soft!!! When we arrived at the factory the owner came in and was amazed that I had made it in so early after another consecutive evening of GAN BEI drinking. That’s when I learned that they brought in the guy I faced off with who was known to be a great drinker around the factory as part of a bet to take me out. We all laughed and then went to work. We had a chance to see more of our shoes in a more complete form that day because the factory worked all night to get our shoes to the next level. When you’re in the factory you can see all kinds of material books and get a chance to use what’s there to make your products better. At the time I was working on the adidas Chromium shoe which was a very clean shoe with the three stripe branding being extremely subtle. I loved adidas but was very bored with seeing the stripes on the side of everything. Our branding strategy was, “We are a three stripes brand!!!” Every shoe had to have a different stripe execution and I was going nuts. My team managers supported my project and that day they put time into helping me get that shoe to where it needed to be. I really felt good knowing they believed in me so we killed that shoe and when it dropped the numbers on it were good.

That evening we didn’t have dinner with the factory owner. Instead we went to a night club on the roof of the hotel with a couple of the factory heads. Now clubs in China are a lot different from what I was used to in America. When we entered the club we were sat at a table and fruit and drinks were brought to us and we watched people party from our booth. We then went on the dance floor and partied until I started feeling a little sick. I went to my room and freshened up, then came back upstairs to finish the night off. We talked and shared stories with the locals and I had the opportunity to really get to know how people saw my country through worldly eyes. I always thought of the Chinese one way, however after spending time on their turf I was amazed at how much I really didn’t know about the people who I worked with to make our product.

7AM wasn’t so bad this day. I had a real good time and the product we were working on was looking good and we were excited that all the arguing and hard work was gonna pay off. We had just spent a week in China and were confident that the product was ready to go. The ride to the airport was like riding on a team bus before a big game. The most important thing was this business gave me a chance to see things and places I would probably never see unless I was in the army. This business is amazing and can give so much to your life besides the accomplishment of seeing your shoe on a shelf or a player. I really hope I can share these stories with you and give you a better understanding of how cool it really is to be a shoe designer.

CounterKicks: How did you get into the footwear industry?

Dallas Stokes: I have been in the industry for about 19 years. I started in high school when some guys came to our school for career day and saw my work. I did a little work with them for a while during my junior and senior year before going to work for a design company that handled work for Reebok.

CK: What shoe companies have you worked for in your career thus far?

Stokes: In my career I have worked for Pony, PUMA, Converse, Skechers, 310 Motoring, Marc Ecko, Reebok, Dunk.Net, Peak, Protege, Magic 23, P.Miller, Oakley, Dada, And1, and adidas.

CK: What footwear designs have you worked on that you’re most proud of?

Stokes: I have to say that I love all my work, even the bad stuff. I have had a few that I loved a bit more like the And1 Tochillin, adidas Chromium, and Protege Stackjack 1.

CK: What sneaker companies and projects are you working on currently?

Stokes: I’m currently working on Peak, Protege, Sean John, Rim Rocka, Van Grack, Militia Project, and The Dallas Stokes Collection.

CK: What do you hope to accomplish with your weekly “Stokes Life” series on CounterKicks?

Stokes: I get asked about the industry and what it’s like to have shoes on the shelf all the time. I hope that this series can shine some light on what it’s like to live this life through my eyes. I took the road less traveled and still walk a different path. If anyone out there can learn from my career highs and my mistakes, then cool.

adidas Originals is launching their latest concept collection this fall dubbed the “MEGA” which takes existing adidas heritage technology and super sizes it for a voluminous look. Here we preview the MEGA Softcell collection in two different styles, a lifestyle running and lifestyle basketball silhouette. adidas recently put together 2 videos showcasing former Wimbledon champion Stan Smith and his adidas Originals tennis shoe. These lowtops will drop as part of adidas‘ ObyO (Originals by Originals) for David Beckham line. This particular model was designed by James Bond of UNDFTD and features a supple black leather upper, with brown leather heel and toe caps that match the brown leather lining. The upper sits on a white midsole with a black stripe and pulls together with black leather laces. Earlier this week, we previewed a first look here at the new Dwight Howard signature shoe coming next year – the adidas Super Beast. Today, we have the first full detailed images of the Super Beast displayed in Black/Blue/White Orlando Magic away game colors. The shoe features new adidas SprintSkin technology which is a lightweight, water repellent synthetic material at the upper, ALIVE cushioning system at the midsole, and Torsion System shank plate underfoot. adidas breaks away from the Team Signature “Brotherhood” concept in spring 2011 with player specific signature shoes for Dwight Howard and Derrick Rose. Inspired by New York City cross-over style that meshes the worlds of skate, rock music, and basketball, the adidas Originals Hillsdale is a leather hi-top silhouette that includes influences from the Superskate shoe. The Hillsdale features an enlarged tongue, minimalist upper, and integrated 3-Stripes design on the medial/lateral upper panels. The shoe will release in 3 colorways - Black/Metallic Gold, White/Collegiate Royal and Aluminum/Macaw – exclusively at Champs this July. Retail is $75. adidas marks the 2010 World Cup with a line of men’s and women’s adidas Originals track jackets and hoodies that honor each participating country. In celebrating the tournament, the brand’s 2010 World Cup collection features track jackets and hoodies inspired by each country’s uniforms as well as by 2010 World Cup host South Africa. Each piece is embroidered with the year each country’s team either hosted or won the competition. Among the countries represented in the Originals line are the United States, England, Argentina, Spain, Brazil, France, Sweden, Italy, South Africa, and Germany. Available now. adidas introduces a new basketball inspired sneaker named the adidas Roundhouse Mid which features modern materials such as carbon fiber paired up with heritage branding. This Black/White colorway is composed of black suede, mesh and carbon fiber vinyl. While the design in brand new, the vintage adidas Trefoil logo is showcased on the tongue, heel, and sole. Images of Michael Beasley’s player edition adidas TS Heat Check are out. The photos below visually capture the heat sensitive material being employed on the 3 Stripes logo badging on the lateral sides of the shoes which changes colors as the wearer’s foot heats up during play. The adidas Greeley is a new addition to the adidas Originals line. They are shown here with a tonal grey upper and off white outsole. The three stripes branding consists of dual zig-zag stitches filled in with lighter gray dots, as opposed to separate material overlays. This panel is made of leather, while the remainder of the upper is made of a grey suede. Look for this chukka styled sneaker to release mid July 2010. The adidas Mad Speed III Boston Celtics White/Green make-up features a white leather upper with a green sockliner, green mesh tongue, and green laces. Green adidas 3-Stripes contour the lateral panels. The block lettered “CELTICS” script is stitched into the rear lateral heel panel, while the Celtics’ shamrock circle logo is seen at the heel. Here’s a new profile image of the adidas TS Heat Check which we previously examined here. Most notable is the high collar design and another look at the unique lacing system employed on the shoe where the user can string the laces through the tongue and into side ankle strips for a tighter performance fit. Underfoot, adidas continues use of Pure Motion technology which debuted on the TS Supernatural line last year. More info to come as it develops.Image via Kenlu
