Under Armour recently hooked up Brandon Jennings with not only his first signature shoe but also this special make-up lifestyle silhouette, dubbed the Proto Swagger. The shoe features a black leather upper, white vulcanized midsole, and red/green Milwaukee Bucks styled trim to accent. A broken glass pattern can be seen on the uppers while Jennings jersey number “3″ is spotlighted at the heel. This particular pair was created and presented as a one-off model for Jennings. When it comes to building up a footwear brand, Gene McCarthy knows the business. Formerly at Nike and Reebok, McCarthy has his eyes set on making Under Armour a major player in the basketball footwear industry. CounterKicks sat down with the UA Senior Vice President of Footwear and talked about his plans for the Micro G performance line, Brandon Jennings as the face of UA basketball, and the strategy and marketing for Under Armour as the company makes its highly anticipated launch into the fiercely competitive basketball sneaker market. Last week’s discovery of a Nike patent filing for an automatic lacing system as seen in the film “Back To The Future II” caused quite the stir not only among sneakerheads but in tech and pop culture circles too. In a well-timed follow up, Blake Bevin, inventor of the “Power Laces” device, releases a version 2.0 of her original concept which garnered 1.4 million views on YouTube in less than a week last month. The new Power Laces 2.0 version conceals the bulky look and exterior of the initial prototype within the sole of the shoe for a look that more closely resembles something Marty McFly would have landed his feet into. Not only that, Bevin is attempting to take the concept to market with a current project funding on Kickstarter looking for $25,000 in seed money to take the device from her basement to your feet.
Speaking with Bevin by phone, she tells CounterKicks that a marketable version of the device would aim to be attached and “adaptable to any shoe” with the machinery of the Power Laces compact enough to be concealed in perhaps the heel of the shoe. Bevin also explains she has no official inventor background and the original concept was created for an art project contest, but sees various uses for the device both from technology/sneaker fans and also people with motor skill disabilities. If pledges through Kickstarter reach her goal of $25,000, a mass market device could be seen as early as within a year, with an ideal retail price of under $100 but more realistically “probably closer to $150″. Will Bevin beat Nike to the punch? Continue reading for a full video demonstration of Bess Bevin’s Power Laces 2.0 concept.

BRRRRIIIINNNNNGGGGGG. “Hello…” “Hey D!!! Let’s start a shoe company!!!” “Hello?” “Hello?” That happens at least once a month. No offense, because I love the fact that people come to me with ambition and feel I’m the guy that can help them, but maaaaan… ambition without knowledge and a plan is like watchin the Nets play the Clippers. Sooner or later somebody’s gonna win, but it’s a painful thing to watch. So you want to start a shoe company? OK let’s do it. It was around 1999 that I realized I could make shoe design more than a dream, a career. I was a freshman in high school and was constantly on the sneaker forums. One young designer shut the boards down for months with his vision for the future of athletic footwear. Back then the Internet knew that young designer as “Alphaproject”. Alpha was the first designer that I became aware of outside of Tinker Hatfield, Aaron Cooper and Eric Avar. Alpha gave me an idea of where I needed to start and what I needed to accomplish to one day make my dream a reality. It gives me great pleasure to bring to you an interview with Alphaproject – better known as Jason Petrie. Continue reading Design Insight: Sessions Vol. 7 With Jason Petrie…
