It was around 1999 that I realized I could make shoe design more than a dream, a career. I was a freshman in high school and was constantly on the sneaker forums. One young designer shut the boards down for months with his vision for the future of athletic footwear. Back then the Internet knew that young designer as “Alphaproject”. Alpha was the first designer that I became aware of outside of Tinker Hatfield, Aaron Cooper and Eric Avar. Alpha gave me an idea of where I needed to start and what I needed to accomplish to one day make my dream a reality. It gives me great pleasure to bring to you an interview with Alphaproject – better known as Jason Petrie. Continue reading Design Insight: Sessions Vol. 7 With Jason Petrie…

Nike Basketball is back with a new ad timed to celebrate Kobe Bryant‘s hunt for a fifth NBA championship. Produced by Wieden+Kennedy, featuring Nike basketball athletes past and present, and strung together by an Andre 3000 cover of The Beatles’ “All Together Now”, the spot keys in on some well-chosen lyrics: “One, two, three, four. Can I have just a little more? Five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, I love you.” Look for the ad to run during the NBA Finals tonight. Over the past week, Nike Basketball has given us a few looks at upcoming and unreleased editions of the Nike KD II at their official Twitter account. In particular, this Blue/Black/Orange-White style of Kevin Durant’s signature shoe was unveiled and is slated for a June release. Notable differences from all previous versions of the KD II is the giant sized “KD” initialing on the forefoot strap, and a modified circular tongue logo replacing the thin “Kevin Durant” material stripe badging. Catalog scans of Nike Basketball’s Holiday 2010 collection have hit the Internet. While many new models and colorways are listed, the most obvious eye-catching silhouette is next season’s Nike Air Max LeBron VIII. The sales catalog officially lists a November launch date for LeBron James’ new signature shoe with at least three initial colorways on deck: White/White/Midnight Navy/Varsity Red, Black/White-Sport Red/Metallic Gold, and a December release in Black/Black-Metallic Gold. Whether the printed silhouette is of the actual Air Max LeBron VIII or a “decoy” illustration is yet to be seen. Jordan Brand sales catalogs for the past several years have used the exact same shadowed silhouette to represent their top tier products like the annual Air Jordan model.
Also seen in the catalog presentation is the Nike Zoom LBJ Ambassador III, additional colorways in the Nike Zoom Kobe V, and official release dates and listed colorways for new models like the Air Max Hyperfly, Nike Zoom Hyperfuse, and Nike Hyperdunk 2010 – some of which you can match up with visuals seen in this Nike 2010 Samples post from last week.
