In the culmination of a year long effort in planning the Pump 20 Anniversary, Reebok celebrated in a classy, low key style at Pop Burger located in NYC’s trendy Meatpacking district. The venue was Pump’d out with Pump20 signage displayed prominently throughout, enlarged, vintage Reebok advertisments gracing the walls and Pump collaborations displayed in cases.

Highlights of the event included Pump inventor Paul Litchfield introducing the film “History of the Reebok Pump” and appearances by NFL Legend Emmitt Smith and the NBA’s “Human Highlight Film” Dominique Wilkins. Both players endorsed Reebok heavily during their playing days with Emmitt’s marquee shoes being the Reebok Pay Dirt & Scrimmage Mid and Nique’s the Reebok Pump OG and the Twilight Zone Pump. In addition to the free food and liquor, Reebok Pump 20 lollipops, keychains, and basketball textured mouse pads were amongst the free items displayed around Pop Burger that attendees were welcome to take home as souvenirs.

All of the Pump 20 collaborations were showcased in light box cases with the US releases being featured individually and the international releases shown in 2 separate cases. The brand’s name appeared next to each Pump and a quote was on the glass above each model that discussed it’s design process and inspiration. Amongst the other items featured in the glass cases were the Pump tooling along with the finished Pump system, preliminary technical drawings, and an OG Pump model.

This was the screening room in the back of Pop Burger where we were among the first to preview the film, “History of Pump Technology”. Paul Litchfield presented the film and thanked everyone for their support and for coming out for the night’s festivities.  We were all then given headsets so we could enjoy the film without the blare of the club’s music affecting us.

Counter Kicks was among select media last night at Pop Burger in NYC to cover Reebok’s official 20th Anniversary Celebration of the PUMP. The official release of the Reebok Pump20 limited edition shop collabs is almost here. Check out this video clip Reebok filmed with Hikmet Sugoer of Berlin-based retailer Solebox for their part in the 20th Anniversary Pump festivities. As one of the few remaining shops who had yet to preview their official Reebok Pump20 collab, A.R.C. has now finally revealed their design. Running with a very neutral color scheme, the shoe features an “ARC Sports” imprint on the lateral toe wrap piece. Look for more Pump20 unveilings before the November 20th global drop date.

*UPDATE: Counter Kicks called Alife Rivington Club at 5:54PM EST today and the Alife employee who answered the phone stated that the shoe above, currently prominently featured on the Alife website, is not coming out nor will be sold. They also stated it is one of a few ARC x Pump20 prototypes, and it happened to be published to the website. If you check our Reebok Pump20 – Complete Group Photos, there does appear to be a colorway difference between what is shown officially from Reebok and what is currently shown on Alife’s website. The official Reebok Pump20 Group Shot vaguely shows an all-white ARC colorway. Each boutique in the Reebok 20th Anniversary collaboration program was filmed to briefly discuss their background and design inspiration for their Pump20 shoe. St. Alfred chose to pay homage to Chicago’s Industrial Revolution with their boot-like design. Check the video above for a behind the scenes look with Krabby from St. Alfred.

Hawaiians have a saying “Mai Huli ‘Oe I Kokua O Ke Kai”, which essentially translates to “never turn your back on the ocean”. This statement is where KICKS/HI drew much of the inspiration for their Reebok Pump 20 design.

In designing the shoe, KICKS/HI took the high-top silhouette as a symbol for a big wave - one that you might see at any one of Hawaii’s world renowned surf breaks. The tan outsole represents the ocean sand bed. The midsole is based on the white caps of the waves breaking on the shore, with the blue splatter as sea spray. The upper consists of a deep sea blue to a free-dive blue to symbolize the depths of the ocean; with the tongue acting as the wave’s crest, and the Pump ball representing the sun shining brightly on the beach.

1989

Reebok The Pump: The original Pump was released as a basketball shoe in Men‘s sizes only. The world’s first shoe with a fully adjustable fit contained a midfoot and ankle air bladder, quilted to control air allocation. As a result, when the bladders were inflated, the majority of the pumped air filled gaps around the ankle, and a marginal amount filled areas less in need of a snug fit such as the forefoot flex zone. The only Pump shoe to feature an air release button on the back. Under foot, it employed ERS cushioning. Worn by Dominique Wilkins, Danny Ainge, Byron Scott, and Doc Rivers.

1990

Reebok The Pump Twilight Zone: The immediate successor to the original Pump shoe, Pump Twilight Zone showcased a familiar high-top height. Men’s sizes featured a midfoot and ankle air bladder, while Kid’s sizes, due to a scaled-down design, offered only a midfoot air bladder. First Pump shoe to use the tongue-based air release button. Pump Twilight Zone included ERS. Worn by Dominique Wilkins.

Reebok The Pump Omni Zone: The first Pump shoe to be offered in both Men’s and Women’s sizes, Pump Omni Zone featured ERS (the final Pump basketball shoe to use this cushioning technology) and mid foot and ankle air bladders. Reebok advertised Pump Omni Zone as a ¾ cut shoe in its advertising, even though the shoe in fact retained the high-top height of its predecessors. Worn by various NBA players including Horace Grant and John Paxson.

Reebok The Pump Court Victory: Worn by tennis star Michael Chang, this Men’s tennis shoe touted lateral and medial support and stability, The first performance -based Pump shoe to utilize Hexalite cushioning. Pump Court Victory’s outsole was made of Dura Trac Plus compound to resist wear with use on tennis courts.

Reebok The Pump Aerobic Lite: Pump Aerobic Lite was the Pump successor to Reebok’s popular Freestyle shoe. Offered only for women, this shoe featured Hexalite cushioning, Hy-Elvaloy midsole, and a molded sockliner with Coolmax vamp for moisture control.

Reebok The Pump AXT: Reebok’s first Pump cross-training shoe, it was offered in Men’s and Women’s sizes. Pump AXT sported a Hy-Elvaloy midsole with Hexalite.

Reebok The Pump SXT: A Pump cross-training shoe tailored just for men, Pump SXT debuted the Reebok Midfoot Stability Bar. Again, Hexalite served as the cushioning system.

1991

Reebok The Pump Running: A Pump running shoe finally debuts and features two air bladders: one around the ankle collar and one underneath the arch. Coolmax sockliner. Goodyear Indy 500 Plus rubber outsole for durability; Reebok calls it “the highest abrasion-resistant material used in the industry.” The Hy-Elvaloy, tri-density midsole was developed for motion control. Hexalite cushioning.

Reebok The Pump Walking: Pump Walking revealed the Reebok Energaire outsole, a sectioned platform that encouraged a consistent foot-strike. With Hexalite in the heel, this shoe gave walkers the option to customize personal fit with a removable sockliner.

Reebok The Pump DL: Reebok’s first non-signature tennis model, Pump DL showcased a modest upper design while loading up on technology: Heel air bladder, Hy-Elvaloy midsole, heel and forefoot Hexalite, and Goodyear Indy 500 rubber in forefoot outsole and toe-off areas.

Reebok The Pump Omni Zone II: Best known as the shoe Dee Brown pumped up at the 1991 NBA Slam Dunk Contest, Pump Omni Zone II picked up where Pump Omni Zone left off, this time replacing ERS with Hexalite and featuring a more styled plastic stability system on the upper. In addition to Brown, this shoe was worn by Dominique Wilkins, Danny Ainge, Doc Rivers, and Dennis Rodman.

Reebok The Pump Omni Lite: Pump Omni Lite resembled Pump Omni Zone II almost identically except Omni Lite offered a mid-cut height, slightly modified plastic stability system on its upper, and a leather ankle collar as opposed to Pump Omni Zone II’s mesh overlay ankle collar. Omni Lite’s Pump system was a midfoot air bladder. In addition to these design differences, Omni Lite’s tongue and heel signage was printed on whereas Omni Zone II’s was stitched into the leather.

Reebok Club Pump: In many ways the successor to Pump DL, the Club Pump showcased a simple upper with Hexalite cushioning and Goodyear Indy 500 Plus rubber outsole for durability.

Reebok Court Victory II: The follow-up to Court Victory, Court Victory II continued its predecessor’s general design language and shared its Hexalite cushioning. Reebok chose Goodyear Indy 500 Plus rubber for the outsole for durability. Worn by tennis star Michael Chang.

1992

Reebok The Pump Above The Rim: An expansion of the Pump basketball line, Pump Above The Rim donned a new iteration of Pump technology: a two-way valve that controlled air flow to a dual-chamber bladder. Turning the valve to the left and pumping inflated the upper chamber. Turning the valve to the right and pumping inflated the footbed chamber. This shoe was also offered in a non-Pump version that included a gumsole and also featured Hexalite.

1993

Reebok The Pump Shaq Attaq: Orlando Magic rookie Shaquille O’Neal’s first signature shoe, Pump Shaq Attaq featured a vibrant white, blue, and black upper, high-top height, midfoot and ankle air bladders, and Hexalite.

1994

Reebok Instapump Fury: A shoe truly unlike any other, Instapump Fury’s laceless upper was a skeletal Pump system that was inflated by a pressurized CO2 cartridge. GraphLite arch bridge provided rigid yet lightweight stability. Hexalite cushioning.

CK: What was production of the Pump like? No one had ever manufactured a shoe like this before and certainly not on a large scale.

Litchfield: The Pump shoe, because it cost so much money, every Pump bladder we made here in Massachusetts at this medical device company. We inspected the Pump twice here in Massachusetts before we shipped it out. We inspected it once when it arrived at the factory, once when it was stitched into the shoe upper, and then once on the finished shoes. So it was inspected five times for at least three hours at a time to make sure it didn’t leak. We were good. I was out there for the first production. We saw the first two days of production. And at the end of the line, all these people are pumping up the shoes to make sure they’re filled up. I flew back from Korea and I was like ’Alright, this is good, I’m okay’ because we got this launch going. About two or three weeks later – because we flew all the shoes in – I get a call from the warehouse. They said ’Hey, the first thousand pair of shoes were okay but these other 6,000 pairs, none of them work.’ I’m like ’What do you mean ‘none of them work‘?’ He goes ’They don’t work!’ I’m like ’You guys are out of your minds.’ So we went down there. They didn’t work. We panicked.

At the end of the line, people had to pump up the basketball. After a couple hours of that, your hands are tired. So they took the needle off of a sewing machine so you had just the guide bar going up and down. Well, what the guide bar did was it went really fast and it bent one of the valves in the Pump ball itself. Nobody knew it because it filled up the shoe but it filled up for the last time. So when they released the air, they’re like ’Okay, Check, they’re all done.’ When they came to the U.S.A., our warehouse goes to inspect them, none of them work. So, all the sudden I’ve got like almost 6,000 pairs of shoes that are pretty much useless. So, we had to go in – me and about six other people – and we literally unstitched the top of the tongue where the Pump ball is. We had to take out the Pump ball, put in a new one, and then stitch it back up without anybody ever knowing it. I don’t think we slept for days, seriously. That’s how smoothly things go sometimes, you know?

CK: There’s been so many shoes with the Pump technology. Do you have a personal favorite or favorites that represent your vision of what a Pump shoe is?

Litchfield: I’m not a designer and I’m not the most fashionable guy going. However, when a good product comes by, I can recognize it. The way I define it for myself is a product that’s elegant, a product that is not over-embellished, fairly simple in its execution, and when people see it they understand it or when they put it on they definitely understand it. I think the first Pump definitely did that with the Pump ball. I thought our VP of Design at the time, Paul Brown, when he did the shoe design that was the drawing for the shoe that launched, the first one with the orange ball, I thought that was brilliant. That was awesome. It captured everything that we needed it to do.

We had set up some parameters. We needed the Pump to be on the tongue, we needed it to be high enough but it wouldn’t be in the way. We gave him a whole bunch of boundaries and he did this design that was ultimately that white and blue shoe that got launched. When I saw it one day, I was like ’That’s the shoe.’ I mean, I didn’t even need to bring it by the marketing people or anything. I just knew that was the shoe. So I’m pretty proud of that shoe. I think that shoe captures a lot. There were some parts of the shoe that I would have changed, looking back on it. We did it with the next one, which was the Twilight Zone. And then we had a shoe called the Pump Omni, which was a great shoe. The Dee Brown shoe [Omni Zone II] is an awesome shoe. The Pump Fury was one that I was really proud of because of the fact that, within our own little group, we were able to kind of redefine what Pump meant at the time. We’ve done some shoes that haven’t even made it to retail that I’m pretty proud of, that I think captured the essence what we were trying to with Pump, even if they didn’t get launched. So, yeah, I’ve got a few shoes that I think are just really cool and kind of my own personal favorites. But it’s funny because every time I bring up a personal favorite, somebody will go ’No, are you kidding me? I like this one better.’ And I’m like ’Alright, whatever.’

CK: What do you remember most from the Pump development process?

Litchfield: I remember everything. We were a pretty small group and we did a bunch of product. I was a product manager, I worked hard. We were really successful – me and a small group of people. The guys out at Design Continuum helped originate the whole thing. There’s a lot of people who got involved and it’s very cool to have been part of that and to be, I hope, an important part of that. It’s great. It’s a great product. The fact is, a lot of people say ’Oh, The Pump was a gimmick, The Pump was this, The Pump was that’ and I’m like ‘Alright, that’s fine.’ But, I’ll tell you, when you put them on, they work. It’s pretty simple. You can disrespect it, you can make fun of it, that stuff doesn’t bother me. I know for a fact that if you put it on and if you inflate the air bladder, it’s going to make the shoe fit better, it’s going to make the shoe more supportive, and it’s going to make the shoe different than any other brand of shoes that you can buy anywhere. So, that’s kind of cool.

CK: How do you see the Pump technology being refined as time continues on?

Litchfield: We’re like Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog. We pop our heads up every now and then and most of the time the business kind of goes along. We work behind the scenes. We’ve been working for a long time at trying to create new opportunities with customizable product using the Pump. I think we’re on the verge of a really great breakthrough, hopefully bringing a new renaissance to the Pump. We haven’t gone away from the Pump in the advanced concept groups, we just have had some successes and a bunch of challenges. That’s the part that brings you back to reality fairly quick.

CK: What is Pump’s legacy?

Litchfield: I’ve got to be really truthful with you. We wanted to make a really great shoe. There are certain aspects of the shoe, particularly the first shoe, that were really good. Certain aspects I didn’t like when we look back on it. It’s a very cool product but I know it’s not perfect. It’s a little humbling when people get enthusiastic about it.

I’m really proud of the Pump. I’m really proud of what we’ve done. I’m really proud to have been a part of it. We didn’t start out trying to do this, like this. We just tried to make a good product that was different and unique and something that we could own. So, the fact that it’s been sustainable and, hopefully, iconic, that’s awesome.

Running with a military theme, the Bodega Pump 20 Collab shoe features an olive green suede upper and comes with “BDGA” branding on the back heel. On the inside of the tongue, the word “SURVIVAL” is embroidered above the individually numbered Pump20 tags. Also coming with Bodega’s Pump drop is a limited t-shirt graphic of an eye patch and beret wearing wolf with the “Pump20″ logo screenprinted on the left shirt sleeve. Stockholm, Sweden based Sneakersnstuff is the latest boutique to release photos of its official collaboration on the Reebok Pump for the Pump technology’s 20th Anniversary this year. The shoe features a wool and nubuck upper mix with “Thinsulate” interior lining and Reebok’s Play Dry moisture-wicking fabric.
